Exciting Testimonials!

A corporate transfer for my husband’s job brought us to Tulsa.  Leaving friends and a job I enjoyed was hard.  Previous moves had prepared me for the ups and downs of settling into a new city.  Newcomers, however, has been the enzyme to make Tulsa home.  It is wonderful to run into people you know at the grocery store, mall, or out to dinner.  People make a place home.  Newcomers are wonderful, welcoming people!

Retirement!  Pick a city, any city – good climate, big, small, or simply nearer to grandchildren.  Tulsa put us closest to the greatest number of our grandchildren and children, so this is where we decided to settle.  The plan seemed simple but the transition was rough at times.  Thank goodness Newcomers plugged us into a fantastic social network.  We can spend precious time with the family, but still enjoy a variety of activities with newfound friends.  Couples Bridge and Cocktails and Conversation are two of our favorites!  We try never to miss an Evening Social party, too!

The children made the move to Tulsa hard and easy.  Hard for all the obvious reasons and easy because school involvement, little league, dance lessons, Sunday school and lots of other child-centered activities quickly immersed us into Tulsa, at least the juvenile side of Tulsa.  What a blessing Newcomers Club has been!  LOFT (Lunch on First Thursday) is a great way for me to explore new restaurants, so on the rare occasions of date-night for mom and dad, I know where to reserve a table.  Couples Mexican Train gets us mingling with adults who don’t need us to volunteer for a single kid-related thing!  Newcomers Club balances our lives with adult interests.

Who says you can never come home again?  Born and raised in Tulsa, and then 35 years in other states living, loving, growing, maturing, and then grieving.  Widowed.  Lost.  Lonely.  Looking for a new start.  Going home again.  The city is the same but very different.  I am a newcomer here.  The Tulsa Newcomers Club has been a terrific way to make new friends.  I love all the daytime activities – playing bridge regularly again is wonderful – discussing a novel that I may not have otherwise read is stimulating – meeting friends for lunch is yummy – and not going to a movie by myself is GREAT!  Newcomers is the new start I needed.

Boy! Was I ready for a change!  I loved teaching in the Tulsa schools, but after 25 years in the classroom, I was ready for retirement.  Within a few months, all the projects I had put off until I was no longer teaching had been completed.  Now what to do with my time?  I love my husband dearly, but I needed friends.  I was so pleased to learn that the Tulsa Newcomers Club welcomes people like me who have made a lifestyle change.  I really enjoy playing daytime bridge and Bunko.  I look forward to the monthly luncheons too because the speakers often encourage me to explore Tulsa with a new perspective.  My second career as a Newcomer is wonderful fun!
